Slouchy Beret

SIZE: approx. 22” circumference.

MATERIALS:-approx 150m of chunky weight yarn.

-1 pair ea of 4.5mm and 5.5mm needles.

 

GAUGE: 18sts=4”

ABBREVIATIONS: M1: With left hand needle pick up the thread before the next stitch from the front of the work. Knit that loop into the back of the stitch.

SSK: Slip the next 2 stitches, one at a time as if to knit to the right hand needle. Put the left needle into the front of these stitches and knit them together.

DoublePSSO: Slip the next 2 stitches together to the right hand needle, K1, pass the 2 slipped stitches over the knitted stitch.

 

DIRECTIONS:

Using 4.5mm needles, cast on 92 stitches loosely.

Work 5 rows in K2,P2 ribbing.

Knit 3 rows.

Change to 5.5mm needles.
Next row (Right side): (K2, M1, K3, M1) to the last 2 sts, K2. 128 sts.
Next row: Purl.
Work 20 rows in stocking st (K1 row, P1 row) ending with a purl row.

Decrease: 

1^st dec row: K1 *K2tog, K9, SSK, K1  Repeat from * to last st. K1.  110 sts.

Work 5 rows in Stocking st ending with a purl row.

Next dec row: K1 *K2tog, K7, SSK, K1  Repeat from * to last st. K1.  92 sts
Work 3 rows in Stocking st ending with a purl row.

Next dec row: K1 *K2tog, K5, SSK, K1  Repeat from * to last st. K1.  74 sts

Work 3 rows in Stocking st ending with a purl row.

Next dec row: K1 *K2tog, K3, SSK, K1  Repeat from * to last st. K1.  56 sts

Work 3 rows in Stocking st ending with a purl row.

Next dec row: K1 *K2tog, K1, SSK, K1  Repeat from * to last st. K1.  38 sts

Purl 1 row.

Next dec row: K1 * DoublePSSO, K1  Repeat from * to last st. K1.  20 sts

Purl 1 row.

Last dec row: *K2tog. Repeat from * to the end. 10 sts.

Cut yarn leaving a 24” tail. Thread the yarn through a tapestry needle and slip the last 10 stitches onto the yarn. Pull the stitches tightly together and tie. Sew the back seam using a mattress stitch.
